How to Make French Press Coffee: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
Share
The French press is the easiest way to get a rich, full-bodied cup at home — no paper filters, no machines, and no guesswork once you know the basics.
What you'll need
- French press (any size)
- BluBrewCo coffee, coarse ground (choose "Coarse" when you order)
- Hot water, just off the boil (195–205°F — about 30 seconds after boiling)
- Kitchen scale or tablespoon, timer, spoon
The ratio: 1 gram of coffee to 15 grams of water (about 1 tbsp per 3 oz of water).
- 12 oz cup: 24 g coffee (about 4 tbsp) + 12 oz water
- 34 oz press (full): 60 g coffee (about 10 tbsp) + 32 oz water
Steps
- Preheat — swirl a little hot water in the press, then pour it out.
- Add coffee — coarse grounds in the bottom of the press.
- Bloom — pour just enough water to wet the grounds (about twice the coffee's weight). Wait 30 seconds while it bubbles.
- Pour the rest — fill to your full amount and give it a gentle stir.
- Steep 4 minutes — put the lid on with the plunger pulled all the way up.
- Plunge slowly — press down steadily over 15–20 seconds.
- Pour right away — coffee left sitting on the grounds keeps brewing and turns bitter.
Troubleshooting
- Bitter or muddy? Grind is too fine or it steeped too long — go coarser or cut to 3½ minutes.
- Weak or sour? Use a little more coffee or steep 30 seconds longer.
Best BluBrewCo coffees for French press: House Blend for an everyday cup, Cowboy Blend if you like it bold, or Bali Blue for a rich, smooth single origin.
